Will I suffer from depression now that I have dementia?

It’s not a given that you’ll develop depression, although depression can be common in those living with dementia. Some experts estimate that around 40% of people with dementia go on to report symptoms of depression at some stage. But much depends on your personal circumstances and the type of dementia you have. And there are things you can do to help. Ways to support your mental health *Get into a good routine *Keep boredom at bay *Don’t allow yourself to become lonely or isolated *Stay active and move your body *Enjoy time outdoors *Eat and sleep well *Minimise stress Find out what’s on in your area here too, because joining a dementia-friendly group, trying an exercise class or joining a choir are all brilliant for boosting mental wellbeing. Help is available If you do find yourself feeling depressed, talk to someone. Tell a loved one or a good friend how you feel. Speak to your GP, too. The doctor might be able to give you medication to help and can also refer you on for talk therapies. It also helps to find a sense of purpose – volunteering, helping others and engaging in activities you enjoy are all great. Some people find alternative therapies such as aromatherapy or massage are useful.
