Will I lose my driving licence if I have dementia?

There isn’t one clear answer for this question, however, if you’re a driver and you receive a dementia diagnosis you are required by law to inform the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) straightaway. Dementia can affect many of the skills required to drive safely, so there is a process to go through to determine whether you’re able to continue to drive. The DVLA will determine whether: - you can carry on driving - you’ll be issued with a licence for a shorter period of time, after which you’ll be reassessed - your driving licence is cancelled You might be asked to take a driving assessment or have a health check. In some cases your GP will be contacted. For more information, contact the DVLA on 0300 790 6806.
