When should I tell my family?

In an ideal world you’ll let your closest family members know you have dementia as soon as possible. But you might want to come to terms with the news yourself first. If this is you, tell them when you’ve had time to process the news and when you’re ready. If you feel you need to talk your feelings through with someone first, ask your GP if you can be referred to a talk therapy service. Alternatively, you can talk this through with someone on the Dementia Connect support line on 0333 150 3456. Here are some tips for sharing your news: *Go slowly. Think about what you want to say and take your time. *Be honest. Admit how you’re feeling about the news. *Be prepared for their reaction – not everyone will react in the same way. *Tell them that you’re still you You might also find support with this on our online forum.
