What does it mean to have a dementia friendly home?

Creating a dementia-friendly home means making some changes to your surroundings and living environment that will help with symptoms of dementia – both now, and in future. It also means looking at practical ways to keep you safe and secure so that you’re happy and confident at home. This could mean addressing things, such as: * Dealing with trip hazards – clearing clutter from floors, removing any items of furniture that could be obstructions etc * Improving lighting – adding lamps, increasing the wattage of lightbulbs (if possible), taking nets down to increase light coming in from windows * Looking at security – improved outdoor lighting, getting a video door bell, adding a security chain inside the door * Improving outside spaces, if you have any * Investigating small ways to support you with any memory issues, i.e. labelling cupboards, putting keys, wallet and glasses in a prominent place etc * Using technology to help with day-to-day living * Reviewing home décor so that it doesn’t create problems with vision and perception in future You can read more about creating a dementia-friendly home here
