Is it safe to swim with dementia?

Yes, it’s safe to swim if you’re living with dementia. In fact, swimming is a good non-weight bearing exercise and a great activity for those living with dementia. One study* showed improvements in wellbeing, pain, balance, functional fitness, concentration and confidence in people with dementia who took part in swimming sessions. It’s a good idea to ask your pool if you can go along before you plan to swim so that you can familiarise yourself with the changing rooms set-up and be shown around. It might also be a good idea to have someone to go with you, too – it will make swimming a sociable thing to do as well as a good physical activity.
