I'm worried about wasting food, will a meal planner help?

If you’re finding symptoms of dementia like memory issues and forgetfulness mean you’re dealing with a lot of food waste, then planning your meals out will definitely help. Making a meal plan is a great idea for anyone who wants to ensure they benefit from a wide, nutritious diet. And you can start by downloading our Meal Planner here and using it to help you think about what kind of meals you enjoy. Tips for using a meal planner to avoid waste You could start your meal planner by looking at one meal type at a time, e.g. breakfast, and creating a shopping list that contains everything you need for a good start to the day, across the whole week. When it comes to your main meal, think about dinners you can batch cook, put in a lidded container in the fridge and re-heat for lunch the next day, or that freeze well so you don’t waste any leftovers. If you like to cook from scratch, consider recipes that share ingredients, so if you buy fresh ingredients you can use leftovers for another meal the following day. For example, if you’re making a shepherd’s pie, plan to have a jacket potato for lunch the next day with leftover potatoes – add some tinned tuna and salad or baked beans and cheese. A meal plan also means you can create a shopping list containing only what you need - without impulse buys that can lead to food wastage. A planned shopping list is also really handy for preventing overwhelm, whether you shop in person or online. It also means you never forget an ingredient - which can sometimes lead to the rest of the meal’s ingredients going to waste.
