I’m caring for someone with dementia, can I claim Carers Allowance?

If you’re providing at least 35 hours of care per week, this can include cooking, shopping, taking the person you care for to the doctors, you might be eligible for Carer’s Allowance.

What is Carer’s Allowance?

Carer’s Allowance is a government benefit designed to provide financial support to people who spend a significant amount of time caring for someone with substantial care needs. You do not have to be related or live with the person. If you’re caring for someone with dementia, this allowance can help ease some of the financial strain.

Who is eligible?

You might be eligible for Carer’s Allowance if:

  • You care for someone with dementia for at least 35 hours a week.

  • The person you care for receives certain benefits such as Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, or Disability Living Allowance.

  • Your earnings are £151 or less a week after tax, National Insurance and expenses.

How to apply

    • By post: if you prefer, you can download a paper application form from the government website or request one by calling the Carer’s Allowance Unit on 0800 731 0297. Complete the form and send it back by mail.

  3. Wait for a decision:

    • After submitting your application, you’ll receive a decision letter. This usually takes a few weeks. If more information is needed, they might contact you.

What happens next?

  • Receiving payments: if your application is approved, you’ll start receiving Carer’s Allowance payments. These are usually paid every 4 weeks.

  • Impact on other benefits: receiving Carer’s Allowance might affect other benefits you or the person you care for receive. It’s important to check how it might impact your situation.
