Talking to someone you care for with dementia can sometimes feel challenging. But keeping things simple, being patient and loving can help your communication stay meaningful. Here are some tips on how to communicate:
Use short, clear sentences and focus on one idea at a time. Avoid complex questions or too much information at once. This helps them follow along more easily without feeling overwhelmed.
Give them time to respond. Dementia can slow down a person's ability to process words, so waiting a little longer for answers can reduce their frustration.
Try to use their name and other familiar names or places in conversations. This can help them feel grounded and connected to the conversation.
If they say something that doesn’t make sense or isn’t accurate, it’s best not to correct them. Instead, focus on the feelings behind what they’re saying. For example, if they’re upset about something that’s not true, offer comfort rather than pointing out they’re mistaken.
Dementia can sometimes bring on feelings of confusion or anxiety. Use a warm tone and gentle words to reassure them. Smiling and nodding as they speak can also help them feel supported.
It can be helpful to focus on things happening now. Talking about simple, everyday things—like the weather, their favourite foods, or something in the room - can feel less overwhelming than talking about the past or future.
Sometimes, gestures or showing objects can help get your message across if they’re struggling with words. Smiling, touching their hand, or pointing to something relevant can make communication clearer.
Let them guide the conversation when they can. If they change topics, go with it, even if it’s not logical. The aim is to keep them engaged and connected rather than focusing on factual accuracy.
The people you care for, will appreciate the love and kindness you show through your words and patience, even if they can’t always express it. Keeping the conversation calm, familiar, and reassuring helps build comfort and understanding.
