Putting everything in order

How to put your affairs in order with possible dementia

Thinking about legal and financial matters isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but ignoring these things can cause issues later

Many of us don’t like dealing with money and most don’t want to think about legal issues, but if you think there’s a possibility that you might have dementia now’s the time to start putting your affairs in order.

Sorting out your finances, organising legal affairs and having a think about how you’d like the coming years to look are all ways to take control of your life, whether you’re living with dementia or not.

By organising your life and thinking about who might be there for you when you have to make important decisions in the future, you’ll be taking some really positive steps towards looking after yourself and your loved ones – both now and in years to come – which is something we should all be doing.

Easy ways to sort your life out

  • Do some life admin. Do you know what you own? What savings you have? Where your insurance policies are – and what they’re for? Take a closer look at your money situation so that you know exactly where you stand. This will help you when it comes to legalities like making a will.

  • Make a will. One of the most important first steps in getting your affairs in order is to make a will – or review your will, if you’ve already made one. Once you’ve made a will, make sure you know where your will is and who the executors are. Read more about this here

  • Put a lasting power of attorney in place. By using legal tools, such as a lasting power of attorney (LPA), you can be sure that you have someone you trust to make decisions for you if there ever comes a time when you’re unable to do so for yourself. Putting an LPA in place now will give you peace of mind in the future. Click here to read more about the different types of LPAs and what power of attorney means.
