Benefits

If I have dementia, what benefits might I get?

You might be concerned that if you have dementia it will affect your money situation. Here’s a summary of the financial help available

One of the concerns for those who think they might have dementia is that a diagnosis raises lots of questions around money.

Some people continue to work following a dementia diagnosis. Others carry on working but opt to reduce their hours – and much depends on the type of work you do. It might also be possible to work towards a managed or phased retirement.

What benefits might I get?

There are a range of discounts, grants and state benefits that you might be able to access if you receive a dementia diagnosis.

1. Needs Assessment

You can apply to your local council for a needs assessment to cover the costs of making necessary changes to your home – read more here
2. Attendance Allowance

Are you over 65 and need help with personal care? You might be eligible for an Attendance Allowance of between £68 and £102 per week* depending on what type of care you need. Find out more here

3. Personal Independence Payment

If you’re under state pension age and need help with everyday tasks due to your dementia you could be entitled to claim for a Personal Independence Payment or PIP for short. It has two elements – one for daily living and one for mobility and you can find out more here

4. Carer’s Allowance

If you have someone who looks after you for more than 35 hours a week they could be entitled to a Carer’s Allowance of around £76 per week but they need to be earning less than £100 a week in order to claim and can’t be in full-time education. Learn more here

5. NHS Continuing Healthcare

This is a package of care that you might be able to access to help with your ongoing needs. You can read more about it here
